When you’re looking at a car, either new or used, a test drive is essential. It makes sure that it suits your needs, you find the driving position comfortable and that you like it. It also lets you check that everything works as it should.

• Try the car on different road types at different speeds, paying particular attention to the type of road you mainly drive on.
• Make sure you find it easy to get in and out of the car.
• Before you set off, make sure the seat/ steering wheel adjustment is to your liking and that the mirrors are set the way you like them.
• Make sure the instrument are clearly visible and the controls are within reach
• Ensure you are happy with the all round visibility when in the car.
• Try reversing into a space. This lets you check rear visibility.
• If you have children, take them with you. This lets you know if there’s enough room for them and that their child seats fit properly.
• Look in the boot. Is it big enough for your needs? Do the seats fold easily?
• Check the condition of the spare wheel and if the jack and tools are there.
